Express Postal Markings Postmarks

Under the Bloomfield these marks were ExD-1 etc. While reluctant to introduce another coding system the one used here list marks under the town name and then by the keyword(s) used within the mark. The town name is grouped under the common English spelling. The keywords give equal weight to Arabic as well as European spellings. See views on postmark coding and for visual representaion see query 28

On these pages where a mark already exists drawn then these have been used otherwise the scanned mark has been used with a minimal amount of doctoring (removing background to present a black and white image). The hope is that the drawn marks will be replaced with good scans and the poor scans will be replaced as better ones become available. As can be seen both methods have their benefits and drawbacks but again we hope to include as many fully scans of the originals, on or off cover, which should make identification easier.

The last sheet with amendments only consisted eleven markings while now the record consists of over 60 markings.

Extracts from the Journal Officiel (as published in QC 139)

Under each mark is the code used which should be used with the town name ie Cairo-D4.k. After the main code other letter represent other words used. Beneath are the earlist and latest dates, if known, and below these comments. If a red arrow is shown put the cursor for more information and if a small cover is shown click on it to see the cover in full scale.
