The purpose of the 'Maths Academy' is to increase mathematical knowledge and by doing so the joy through understanding. Maths underpins our whole society whether it be to calculate the best mobile phone rate, the real interest rate of that credit card, pension options, income tax or from a collection of data to determine if eating an apple a day does in fact keep the doctor away.

Basic numeracy is the basic key the understanding of numbers and how to read them. Sadly children and others are still taught methods in simple arithmetic that can be cumbersome while alternate methods are available that make learning easier and more fun.

While the use of calculators is whole heartily encouraged mental arithmetic at the early stages is important to get the feel of numbers. The academy's principle has spent the last twenty years writing mathematical software, used by M&S, BHS, RAPRA, Rolls Royce, Boeing and many well known industrial names throughout the world. While supporting the use of computers that can number crunch vast amounts of data he has been constantly surprised at the lack of mathematical understanding among some of these organisations. Statistical programmes are used incorrectly, or simply dismissed through ignorance, data is fed in at one end, inappropriate statistical methods chosen and the computer given results blindly accepted.

The courses make use of the internet by introducing subjects showing worked examples with questions for the student. These can be down loaded in pdf format. In their own time the student can then submit their answers or compare them with those given on this web site. If any difficulties are encountered then personal tutoring, face to face, can then be targeted at these predetermined problems. By this method the face to face tutoring is kept to a minimum and so reducing the overall cost. Experience has shown in the government's failed e-education enterprise that depending solely on the internet does not work as individuals need that personal attention to overcome their own particular hurdles. The tutoring aims not to simply give the answers but to give pointers and clues so the student discovers the answers themselves. For some of the advanced topics only their principles are discussed and shown with data sets, these may be down loaded and played with in excel or other suitable packages.
